Assistant Professor, DADDAA & Statistical Sciences
Dunlap Associate Josh Speagle is an Assistant Professor of Astrostatistics jointly appointed between the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Department of Statistical Sciences. He received his bachelor’s degree in astrophysics and physics from Harvard University in 2015, spent a year at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe in Japan, and returned to Harvard for his PhD in astronomy in 2020. He came to Toronto in 2020 as a Banting & Dunlap Postdoctoral Fellow and joined the faculty in 2022. He co-leads the Astrostatistics Research Team (ART) with Gwen Eadie, develops open-source statistical software used across astronomy, and helps run the Astronomy & Astrophysics Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).
Prof. Speagle works at the intersection of astronomy, statistics, and AI, building statistical and machine learning methods and applying them to large astronomical surveys. Most of his work centres on Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification, and scalable computation, used to understand how stars and galaxies — including our own Milky Way — form, behave, and evolve.
