Watch Eclipse 2024 on April 8 from anywhere in the world

“I’m most excited to see totality because I’ve heard so many things about it and am now so hyped up about it,” says alum Ilana MacDonald, public outreach, communications and events strategist with the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics. “It’d be a real shame if I missed it.”

Eclipse 2024, on April 8, is almost here, and if you’re as excited as MacDonald to see it but are outside the path of totality — or are concerned about inclement weather possibly thwarting your view of this remarkable celestial event — she and Arts & Science’s Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics have you covered with a comprehensive livestream.

“Ideally, you’d want to watch the eclipse live,” says MacDonald, who earned her PhD from U of T in 2013. “You’d want to go outside and put on your eclipse glasses and watch it, but we realize not everybody will necessarily have that opportunity.”

Eclipse 2024: Chasing the Shadow from Niagara to Newfoundland” will offer a front row seat to the eclipse, no matter where you are in the world. Viewers will be treated to detailed coverage of the complete solar eclipse, featuring expert correspondents stationed along eastern Canada’s path of totality. Learn amazing facts about the total eclipse and watch the livestream safely to see how different locations are experiencing this extraordinary event.

“We have one expert providing information about the corona of the sun, and another doing a safety demonstration. We have someone else talking about the sounds of the sun and space, which is going to be really fun,” MacDonald says. We’ve got a lot of additional content that you wouldn’t get if you were just outside watching the eclipse on your own.”

MacDonald shares her safety tips for watching the eclipse in person and what to watch for:
