Attention: Prof Bryan Gaensler
Applications are invited for a position as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard College Observatory to work on neutron stars and supernova remnant research in collaboration with Prof Bryan Gaensler. The successful applicant will participate in new and ongoing programs within an enthusiastic research group, currently consisting of two senior scientists, three postdoctoral fellows and associated graduate and undergraduate students. Topics to be addressed will include multi-wavelength observations of pulsar wind nebulae and bow shocks, studies of the interaction of neutron stars with supernova remnants and with the ISM, and analysis of pulsar proper motions. Much of this work will involve the analysis and interpretation of X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM, but will also incorporate data at radio, optical and other wavelengths.
Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent in physics or astrophysics, should have demonstrated observational experience relating to supernova remnants and/or neutron stars, and should be skilled at oral and written communication. This position will be offered for an initial period of one year, with an extension to second and third years subject to performance. The nominal starting date is 01 September 2004, but earlier starting dates are acceptable.
Interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, list of publications and statement of research interests, and should arrange to have letters of recommendation submitted by three professional scientists familiar with the candidate's research. The closing date for applications is 01 Dec 2003. Electronic submissions are encouraged. Further information can be obtained via email from Prof Gaensler at bgaensler@cfa.harvard.edu. AAE/EOE.
