Have you ever wondered how we study objects in space?

Are you curious how we have determined how old the universe is?

Are you considering going to university?

This summer, the University of Toronto and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics are holding a workshop for grade 11 and 12 students which aims to provide a hands-on introduction to coding, cutting-edge astrophysics, and answer your questions about university. The event will have talks from experts in the fields of globular clusters and cosmology as well as introduction to coding and the opportunity to use real telescope data to determine the age of the universe! There will also be a panel with current undergraduate and graduate students to answer all your questions about applying to and attending university. We will provide computers, transit fares, and lunch to all attendees. The registration deadline has already passed. Please keep an eye on our social media for announcements of any future events!

Who can register?

Students in the GTA who will be entering grade 11 or 12 in Fall 2023 or have just completed grade 12 in 2023.

When and where is the event?

Wednesday, July 26, 2023. The event will take place in the McLennan Physical Laboratories at the University of Toronto. The exact location and room information will be distributed to the students attending.

What does it cost to participate?

Nothing! This event is completely free! We will provide transit fares, lunch, snacks, and computers to use for the day.

Do I need any prior knowledge or experience?

No! Other than taking the standard high school physics and math courses, we will tailor the event to all skill levels.

Does registering automatically mean I can attend?

Due to limited resources, this event will be limited to 30 students. In the case that we have more registrants than available spots, we will be giving priority to students for whom this event would be particularly beneficial. This will be judged on a rubric broadly considering, in no particular order: the applicant's prior access to similar activities; the applicant's demonstrated interest in astronomy and understanding of how this workshop aligns with their personal goals; and whether the applicant will be able to participate in future years (based on grade level). We will contact everyone who registers to inform them if they are selected to attended or not by June 30th, 2023.
